1940 US Census of the Presley Family (Vernon, Gladys, Elvis)

Here's the 1940 US Census for the Presley Family.

In the Upper Right hand corner, it says that the Census was taken on May 10, 1940.   I find this piece of information useful because it helps put birth dates and other events into perspective and proper order.

The location is on the Left side of the page.  In the upper left, it says State:  Mississippi,  County:  Lee, and Township: "Beat 3."

On a typical census, on the far left side of the page, vertically, it will list the street name; also the house number by the Family name.  In this instance, there is not any street name given.  Due to there not being a regular town name, this indicates a non-city area.

Sorry for the tiny handwriting in the picture.  Making it bigger didn't help any.  I got the image from Ancestry.com, but you might want to set up a free account at https://www.familysearch.org or do a general search online if you wish to see the image better.

One thing about genealogy that I want to mention, is that it is important to do a good job.  Some people, due to lacking patience, will rush to get results and thus do a job that is not thorough enough to be correct.  It also helps to look for little details that give gems of information.

So, there isn't a house number given, but it does indicate that the "Pressley" household was the 384th household visited in that area that the census taker was in charge of.  It does show an "R" indicated that Mr. Presley was renting the home, and that it wasn't farm property, and that the monthly rent was $6.00.  It was not fancy housing of course, but that does show how inflated our currency is now.
https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl  shows that $6.00 is $126.99 today.
Other neighbors on that census page rented for $7.00-$9.00 per month.  The one family that showed ownership, their house was valued at $2500.00 and it was farm property.  All the families on that page that owned their home, were farm properties.  The rentals (3 families) were listed as non farm property.

10-1/2 residences were listed on that page:  17 "Negro" people (representing 3-1/2 families) compared with 23 White people.   The page before listed mostly "Negro" families and the page after, listed mostly White families.  So it was definitely a bi-racial neighborhood.

Vernon Pressley (male) was listed as the head of household, White, 24 years old, married, and with a 5th grade education.  He did not attend school/college since March 1, 1940.  His birthplace was given as Mississippi.  In the box inquiring about place of residence in 1935, it says "R" for "all other places" as opposed to being in the same house.  It says, Lee {County}, and that "Yes" it was on a farm.

Vernon had no private work, but he did have public work for the week of March 24-30.  Public emergency work was listed as projects such as the WPA, NYA, CCC, ETC.    He was not seeking work or otherwise had a job.  He had been out of work for 168 weeks (about 3-1/4 years).  His occupation was listed as CARPENTER, for a Work project.   Vernon had worked 23 weeks in 1939, and made $361.00 other than the usual wage or salary, for that year.

Gladys Pressley (female)'s information was very similar to Vernon's.  She was listed as wife/married, White, 26 years old, no education taken that time frame, 5th grade education.  She didn't have a regular job, wasn't looking for work, worked at Home (homemaking).  Her occupation was listed as SEAMSTRESS, for a Sewing Room (there were some public works where they used seamstresses to make clothes for the needy).  She worked for 16 weeks in 1939 and made $120 in that time frame from other job income.

Elvis Pressley (male) of course was the kid of the family.  He was listed as 5 years old, with "0" grade education.  Work:  Was this a mistake?  --because the census says that in 1939 (as a 4 year old, mind you) he worked 48 weeks that year and made $360.00!
